Dale - I think the information I posted was wrong.  They say they have fossil remains that are 60 million years old. I am pretty sure we have some older than that who are still alive.

Dale - You might want to find another way of quieting them without getting too close to their mouths.  Maybe a tranquilizer gun.

The vampire bat feeds only on blood. It gets the blood from horses, cattle, dogs, chickens, and people. With its two sharp upper incisors (the front teeth) it makes a shallow hole in the skin of its victim. It then laps the blood that comes from the wound.
Bats may have from 20 to 38 teeth. A curious thing is that there is no bat known to have 22 teeth. Some of the insect-eating bats have as many as 38 teeth! So you see that teeth are quite important to a bat.

Did you know that bats have been on earth for so long that they are one of the oldest established orders of animals? Fossil remains of bats have been found that are about 60,000,000 years old! The earliest known picture of a bat is in a tomb in Egypt. It was made about 4,000 years ago.

I want to thank the Ladies of BAT for braving the elements to put in an appearance at Meramec this weekend. I know it had to be hard for you to leave the comfort of your cave and venture out into the bright light of day. Mother Nature must have taken mercy on you as there wasn't a lot of sunshine for you to contend with. I hope that Jerry's fire attracted enough bugs to make an enjoyable dining experience for you. Jerry did his absolute best to keep the home fires burning. I am working on a special patch just for you gals. I want you to know that Dale, Larry and I really appreciated your efforts to make us feel appreciated by providing us with that very special necklace to wear.
